The Best of Both Worlds
Generate solar power, store energy for later, and stay connected to the grid for ultimate reliability and savings.
Use your own solar at night, not just at noon
A hybrid system combines solar panels, battery storage and a grid connection. Your home uses solar during the day, stores what it does not need, draws from the batteries in the evening, and still has the grid there when it needs it.
The point of the battery is self-consumption. Without one, most of a household's solar is generated while nobody is home and gets exported for whatever buy-back rate the retailer is offering. With one, that same energy runs your evening instead - the cooking, the heating, the television, the car.
Hybrid suits you if
- The house is busiest in the morning and evening rather than the middle of the day
- You want the fridge, lights, internet and water pump to keep running through an outage
- You would rather use your own power in the evening than export it cheaply
- You are on a plan where peak-time electricity is expensive

Not every hybrid system backs up the whole house
This is the detail worth understanding before you buy, because the word "hybrid" on its own does not tell you what happens in a power cut.
No backup
Solar and storage for savings only. In an outage the system shuts down like a standard grid-tied install. The cheapest hybrid option.Essential circuits
A backup circuit keeps the things that matter alive - lights, fridge, internet, garage door, water pump. The usual choice for a family home.Whole-home backup
The house runs as normal through an outage. Needs a bigger battery and more careful design, and is the option on our Platinum package.Five Simple Steps

What people ask about hybrid solar
Why choose hybrid solar instead of standard grid-tied solar?
Hybrid solar gives you more control. Instead of exporting most excess solar power during the day, you can store it and use it later when electricity prices may be higher. A hybrid system can also provide backup power during outages if it is designed with backup functionality.
Can a hybrid system keep my home running during a power cut?
Yes, but only if the system includes backup capability. Not all hybrid systems automatically provide whole-home backup. Some only back up selected circuits such as lights, fridge, internet, garage door, water pump, or essential appliances.
Can I add batteries later?
In many cases, yes. Some grid-tied systems can be designed as battery-ready, making it easier to add storage later. However, not all inverters are battery-compatible, so it is worth planning ahead if you think you may want batteries in the future.
Are batteries worth it in New Zealand?
Batteries can be worthwhile for customers who want backup power, better self-consumption, more energy independence, or protection from peak electricity pricing. The financial return depends on your usage pattern, battery size, electricity rates, solar generation, and whether you value backup power as well as savings.
What type of batteries are used for solar?
Most modern solar battery systems use lithium-based batteries, commonly lithium iron phosphate, also known as LFP. These are popular because they are stable, long-lasting, and well suited to daily cycling.
Our Other Solutions
Grid-tied, hybrid or fully off-grid - and, if you want it, the gas taken off the property and the electrical work done while we are there. Which combination suits you depends on how much power you use during the day, whether you want the lights to stay on when the network goes down, and what you want the system to do in ten years. That is what the free assessment is for.

Helpful to have on hand: a recent power bill, roughly how many people live in the house, and whether you have or are considering an EV. If you do not have those to hand, that is fine - the assessment is how we work it out.
