A top-up on the mortgage you already have
Most of the major New Zealand banks run a sustainable or green home loan product. In broad terms it is a top-up on your existing mortgage, ring-fenced for things that make the house more energy efficient - solar panels, batteries, insulation, heat pumps, double glazing - and offered at a reduced or zero interest rate for a fixed period.
That structure is why solar is often cashflow-positive from month one for a household that would otherwise be paying the same money to a power company. The important thing is that the loan is between you and your bank. We do not arrange it, we do not take a margin on it, and we are not a financial adviser - we just supply and install the system it pays for.
What to ask your lender
- What rate applies, and for how long - the 0% period is usually fixed and finite
- The maximum amount, and whether batteries and EV chargers qualify as well as panels
- Whether it has to sit against an existing mortgage with that bank
- What evidence they need - most want a written quote before they will approve it
- Repayment term, and what the rate reverts to at the end of the fixed period
